About weight management
Weight management here means a prescription medicine alongside changes you make yourself. The medicine does one job — it makes it easier to eat less — and it works while you take it.
The dose is not fixed. Treatment starts low and moves up in steps, with a minimum interval between them, because side effects are worst when a dose rises faster than the body settles. A prescriber decides each step, and you are asked how you have got on before every supply.
It is not a short course. Most people who stop regain what they lost, so the question a prescriber asks at every review is whether continuing is still the right thing.
What the consultation asks
- Your height and weight, which decide whether treatment is appropriate at all.
- Your family background, because the threshold is lower for several of them.
- Any condition related to your weight, which can lower the threshold further.
- Everything you take, and anything you have tried before.
When we cannot treat you
These are facts about the medicines rather than judgements about you. If any of them apply, please speak to your GP — there may well be something that suits you, and it is not something we can decide remotely.
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy in the next two months.
- A personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer, or MEN 2.
- Current or previous pancreatitis.
- An eating disorder now or in the past.
- A BMI below the threshold for your background, with no weight-related condition.
