About Wegovy
Wegovy contains semaglutide and is given as an injection under the skin once a week, on the same day each week. It is a prescription-only medicine.
A course begins at the lowest strength and moves up in steps, with a review before each increase. Some people stay on a lower strength; that is a clinical decision rather than a delay.
Whether this medicine is prescribed, at what strength, and whether a strength is increased are decisions a prescriber makes after reading your consultation and reviewing your progress.
Strengths and prices
Wegovy is priced per pen. One unit is one pen, four weekly doses, which covers 28 days.
Treatment starts at the lowest strength and is reviewed before any increase.
| Step | Strength | Price per pen |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0.25 mgstarting strength | £83 |
| 2 | 0.5 mg | £93 |
| 3 | 1 mg | £93 |
| 4 | 1.7 mg | £144 |
| 5 | 2.4 mg | £196 |
| 6 | 7.2 mg | £350 |
One pen, four weekly doses. Prices include VAT. Delivery is £4.99 per order. A strength is prescribed, and increased, only where a prescriber judges it appropriate; the ladder above is the order strengths are worked through, not a list to choose from.
Whether it is suitable for you
Wegovy is not suitable for everyone, and it is not appropriate for some people at any strength. Your prescriber checks your medical and family history, the medicines you already take, and whether you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, before deciding. Where treatment is declined, the reason is explained.
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy in the next two months.
- A personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer, or MEN 2.
- Current or previous pancreatitis.
- An eating disorder now or in the past.
- A BMI below the threshold for your background, with no weight-related condition.
The full list of side effects, warnings and reasons a medicine must not be taken is in the Summary of Product Characteristics and the patient information leaflet supplied with it, both published on the electronic medicines compendium. Read the leaflet before taking any medicine, and report a suspected side effect to us and through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme — how to report one.
If you feel unwell while taking it, do not wait for us: call 111, or 999 in an emergency. What to do out of hours lists the symptoms that should be acted on the same day.
Common questions
- Can I ask to be prescribed Wegovy?
- You can say what you are interested in during the consultation. Which medicine is prescribed, at what strength, and whether it is prescribed at all are decisions the prescriber makes after reading your answers.
